Journal positioning

The American Historical Review (AHR) is the flagship journal of the American

Historical Association and a generalist venue for the whole discipline of history,

publishing original research of significance across all fields, periods, and world

regions. Its defining expectation is an argument whose interest reaches **beyond the

specialist subfield** — a contribution that historians of other periods and places

will find consequential — grounded in deep primary research and an explicit

historiographical intervention. A meticulous but narrowly specialist study with no

• Original historical arguments in any field, period, or region, when the stake is

legible to non-specialists.

history of ideas, the body, the environment, capitalism, empire, and the digital).

• The contribution is an original, clearly stated argument with significance

beyond the subfield; "we know more about X" is not enough — name the intervention.

• Primary-source command must be deep and appropriate to the field; archival, textual,

or material evidence is read critically, not merely cited.

• The historiographical positioning is explicit: what conversation the piece enters and

how it changes it.

• Interpretation is controlled by evidence; claims are proportionate to the sources and

alert to their silences and biases.

• Engagement with relevant scholarship across (not only within) the subfield

demonstrates the broader stake.

Structure & house style

• Long-form scholarly article with a sustained argument; re-check current word limits

and article types (articles, AHR's distinctive features) on the live guide.

• Chicago notes-and-bibliography style with full footnotes; archival citations follow

the journal's form.

• Double-blind review: anonymize the manuscript (remove self-identifying citations and

acknowledgements) per current policy.

• Prose is argument-driven and accessible to historians outside the subfield; foreign-

language sources are quoted and translated per policy.

• Images and figures, where used, require reproduction permissions and meet the

journal's specifications.

• An argument that adds a case to a settled debate without reframing it.
• Thin or uncritical use of primary sources, or claims out of proportion to the evidence.
• No explicit historiographical positioning ("the literature says… and so do I").
• Wrong venue: a piece pitched to one area community that a specialist journal would serve better.

Re-routing decision

• Society/economy/culture history with a problem-driven argument → past-and-present.
