Theory Building (phg-theory-building)

A PiHG essay lives or dies on its organizing concept — the idea through which a scattered literature is

re-read into one argument. Unlike an empirical paper, where theory frames a study, here the **concept is

the instrument of synthesis**: it decides what counts, how the sources relate, and what the field should

see differently. Build it before you draft.

When to trigger

  • Moving from "there is a literature on X" to "here is the concept that re-orders X"
  • A reviewer said the review is "descriptive," "a-theoretical," or "just a summary"
  • Choosing between organizing the essay by the literature's own buckets vs. by your concept
  • Deciding whether to import, extend, or coin a concept

Pick the conceptual move

| Move | What it does | Best when |

|------|--------------|-----------|

| Import a concept from elsewhere | Read the literature through an outside lens it has ignored | The field is siloed and an external idea exposes a shared structure |

| Extend / rework an existing concept | Show the field's own concept has drifted or is under-specified, and re-specify it | A key term is doing too much or means different things to different camps |

| Coin / name a concept | Give a name to a pattern the field keeps hitting but has not named | Several literatures circle the same unnamed thing |

| Genealogize a concept | Trace and periodize how a concept changed, to intervene in its next phase | A concept has a long, contested history |

Most PiHG essays do one of these well. Trying to do all four dilutes the intervention.

The load-bearing test

Your concept must do work the literature's own categories cannot. State it as: *"Read through ___,

these otherwise-separate literatures are revealed to be ___, which the field has missed because ___."* If

the essay could be reorganized under the literature's existing headings with nothing lost, the concept is

decorative, not load-bearing — and the review collapses into a summary.

Make the concept portable

PiHG rewards concepts other geographers can carry to their own cases. A good organizing concept:

  • Names a relation or mechanism, not just a theme ("the circuit," "scalar mismatch," "relational

precarity" — not "the platform economy").

  • Travels across sub-fields (economic, urban, feminist, political ecology) rather than fitting only one.
  • Has scope conditions: where it illuminates and where it should break — a concept that explains

everything explains nothing.

Theory across human-geography traditions

| Tradition | What "theory" looks like here | The bar |

|-----------|-------------------------------|---------|

| Political-economic | a structural mechanism (capital, labor, rent, state) | specify the mechanism, not just "capitalism" |

| Post-structural / cultural | a relational or discursive concept | show what it lets the field do, not just say |

| Feminist / post-colonial | a critique that reworks whose knowledge counts | change practice, not only vocabulary |

| More-than-human / relational | a concept re-distributing agency across human/non-human | keep it analytically usable, not just gestural |

Worked micro-example (illustrative)

Literature's own buckets: precarity / algorithms / resistance (three parallel conversations)
Decorative theory: "we adopt a critical lens on platform labor" (renames, organizes nothing)
Load-bearing concept: "the CIRCUIT" — control, precarity, and resistance are the same relation seen from
different nodes of a spatial circuit; the field missed this by treating the platform as a bounded object
Portability: any labor geographer can ask where in the circuit a given effect is produced
Scope conditions: holds where labor is distributed across nodes; weaker for genuinely single-site work

Checklist

  • [ ] One clear organizing concept, not a theme or a lens-in-name-only
  • [ ] It reorganizes the literature (load-bearing test passed)
  • [ ] It names a relation/mechanism and is portable across sub-fields
  • [ ] Scope conditions stated (where it illuminates / breaks)
  • [ ] The conceptual move (import / extend / coin / genealogize) is chosen and singular

Anti-patterns

  • A "lens" named in the abstract that never reorganizes anything
  • Organizing the essay by the literature's own headings and calling it theory
  • A concept so broad it fits every case and discriminates nothing
  • Coining jargon for a pattern that already has a good name
  • Borrowing a non-geographic theory wholesale with no reworking for space/place

Output format

【Concept】the organizing idea in one phrase
【Move】import / extend / coin / genealogize
【Load-bearing】what it reveals that the literature's own categories cannot
【Portability】the sentence another sub-field could import
【Scope conditions】where it holds / breaks
【Next】phg-literature-positioning
