Topic Selection & Fit (lang-topic-selection)

Language is the LSA's generalist flagship, covering phonology, syntax, semantics, morphology,

historical and typological work, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and computational linguistics.

The bar is not "new data from language X" — it is **"a theoretically grounded claim, carried by

rigorous evidence, that a linguist outside my subfield should care about."** A description with no

analytic payoff, or a demonstration that runs only inside one formalism, is off-fit and often

desk-returned. Use this skill to pressure-test fit before you invest.

When to trigger

  • Choosing among projects or framings for a Language submission
  • A colleague said the paper is "descriptive," "narrow," or "only for [framework] people"
  • Deciding between a General Research Article and a shorter Research Report
  • Weighing Language against a subfield venue (e.g., Phonology, NLLT, Journal of Semantics,

Language Variation and Change)

The Language fit test

A strong Language paper usually clears all four:

  1. Theoretical stakes. It changes how linguists analyze something — an interface, a typological

generalization, a processing mechanism — not just what one language happens to do.

  1. Rigorous, transparent evidence. Glossed primary data, a corpus, an experiment, or historical

sources documented well enough that a reader could check the pattern (see lang-data-and-transparency).

  1. Cross-subfield significance. A phonologist and a syntactician can both see why it matters —

because it bears on a shared question about grammar, meaning, variation, or change.

  1. Framework-fluent, not parochial. The claim engages rival analyses; it does not assume one

formalism and ignore the alternatives (see lang-theory-building).

Language vs. a subfield venue (frame to the right journal)

| | Language (LSA) | Subfield venue |

|--|------------------|----------------|

| Audience | the whole discipline | specialists in one area |

| Premium on | general theoretical import + broad legibility | depth within the subfield's assumptions |

| Framework stance | engage across frameworks | often assumes the house framework |

| If your paper is | a claim that reshapes a general question | a fine-grained result for insiders |

> Sending framework-internal work to Language invites a "why not [subfield journal]?" reviewer note.

> Send it here when the payoff travels beyond the framework and the subfield.

Framing by subfield (write past your home area)

| Home subfield | Reach the discipline by… |

|---------------|--------------------------|

| Phonology / phonetics | state the general claim about representations or the phonetics–phonology interface, not just the alternation |

| Syntax / morphology | show what the pattern reveals about architecture (e.g., locality, the lexicon–syntax boundary), not one derivation |

| Semantics / pragmatics | tie the analysis to a general question about meaning composition or inference |

| Sociolinguistics / variation | connect the variable to a mechanism of change or a general model of variation |

| Historical / typological | extract the portable generalization, not a single-language chronology |

| Psycho- / computational | link the model or experiment to a claim about grammar or processing the field can carry |

Fit-screen decision table (what to do with each verdict)

| Signal from the four-part test | Action |

|--------------------------------|--------|

| All four clear; claim travels | proceed to lang-theory-building |

| Rigorous data but thin stakes | climb from description to analysis before submitting |

| Framework-internal result | broaden the engagement, or send to the subfield venue |

| Pure description of one language | reframe around a general claim, or it is off-fit |

Calibration (Language appetite, hedged)

Orienting contrasts, not rankings; confirm scope on the current author pages. Language is unusual in

asking a phonetician's paper to be readable by a semanticist: breadth of readership is the constraint

that shapes framing. It rewards new empirical territory raised to a general claim — a

well-documented pattern from an under-described language is welcome when it is a case of something.

Illustrative: fieldwork on an evidential system framed as "language Y has four evidentials" reads as

descriptive; reframed as "the evidential–tense interaction adjudicates between two theories of how

evidentiality composes," it speaks to semantics broadly and flips the verdict to strong fit.

Anti-patterns

  • A description of one language with no theoretical claim (a classic desk return)
  • A result that holds only inside one framework, with rivals ignored
  • "First study of X in language Y" as the whole contribution
  • Defaulting to Language for prestige when a subfield venue fits the contribution better
  • A quantitative pattern with no model and no shared data behind it

Output format

【Question】one sentence
【Theoretical claim】the general point a linguist outside my subfield can use
【Evidence base】glossed data / corpus / experiment / historical sources
【Cross-subfield significance】who beyond my area cares, and why
【Framework stance】which rivals it engages
【Type】General Research Article / Research Report / other section
【Fit verdict】strong / needs reframing / off-fit / better at a subfield venue
【Next】lang-theory-building
