EACL Topic Selection

Use this before committing effort to route a project to the right venue. EACL is the ACL's

European Chapter meeting — all of CL/NLP is in scope, with a community and location that make

it a natural home for multilingual and lower-resourced-language work — but "could go to EACL" and

"is best at EACL" are different questions. Decide by fit, timing, and the alternatives.

Is it EACL-shaped?

Strong EACL fits share a profile:

  • A well-scoped NLP question answered with careful, often multilingual, controls.
  • Analysis, critique, resources, or evaluation-integrity contributions are welcome, not only

new systems — EACL best papers routinely go to these (see

../../resources/exemplars/library.md).

  • Work on European and neighbouring-region languages or lower-resourced settings has a

receptive audience, though topical scope is not region-restricted.

Route-elsewhere signals

| Signal | Better venue |

|---|---|

| Flagship-scale result wanting the largest audience | ACL |

| Empirical-methods framing, autumn timeline | EMNLP |

| North-American-hosted edition timing fits better | NAACL |

| Asia-Pacific community/timing fits better | AACL |

| Polished journal-length result, no page pressure | TACL or Computational Linguistics |

| Language-resource / corpus / multilingual dataset paper | LREC-COLING |

| Language-model-centric contribution | COLM |

| Core-ML method with NLP as one application | an ML venue (NeurIPS/ICML/ICLR) |

Timing dominates the decision for EACL

  • EACL draws from a single ARR cycle with no fallback (August 2026 for EACL 2027) and runs on

an irregular cadence. So routing is not only about fit: if the one cycle does not fit your

timeline, a sibling venue with a nearer cycle may be the rational choice even for an

EACL-shaped paper.

  • Conversely, if the cycle fits and the paper is EACL-shaped, the early-spring slot gets your

result out ahead of the summer/autumn venues.

Long vs short

Choose short (4 pages) when:
  - one clean claim with decisive evidence
  - a focused analysis, resource, or negative result
Choose long (8 pages) when:
  - multiple contributions or a method needing full development
  - breadth (many languages/tasks) is itself the argument
A short idea padded to long reads as thin; a long idea cut to short reads as incomplete.

The accept-Findings calculus

  • Findings of ACL: EACL is archival and Anthology-published. Accept it when the work is solid

but not top-tier for the main track and you value a timely, citable record; push for main or

re-route when main-conference visibility is essential and the reviews support it.

  • Because there is no next EACL cycle to retry, weigh a Findings offer against the real

alternative (a different conference months later), not against an imaginary next EACL round.

Output format

[EACL fit] Strong / Marginal / Poor
[Why] <scope + community + contribution-type reasons>
[Timing check] <does the single ARR cycle fit? fallback venue if not>
[Better venue if any] <ACL/EMNLP/NAACL/AACL/TACL/CL/LREC-COLING/COLM/ML>
[Long vs short] <recommendation>
[Findings stance] <accept / push-for-main / re-route>
